MELT
Mixed media installation of 112 kilograms of waste polymers salvaged from landfill, 2024.
The weight of the installation represents the average usage of plastic per person for one year. We are living in a plastic paradox - used by us for a brief moment, plastic endures for centuries.
Do you notice all the plastic you interact with?
The average time one plastic bottle is used is 12 minutes, whilst it takes 450 to a 1000 years to decompose. One million bottles are bought every minute. Once used only 1 out of 10 is recycled, the rest are discarded to landfills.
What if you had to store all the plastic you consume?
It is estimated that an average of 80-130 kilograms of plastic is consumed per person every year and around 3 tonnes per lifetime depending on country of residence. Only plastic bottles over your lifetime would fill this room completely.
